Bifidobacteriosis is an infrequent but significant bacterial disease in plants caused by members of the Bifidobacteriaceae family. Although generally classified as commensal bacteria, certain strains can exhibit opportunistic pathogenic behavior, particularly in weakened plant tissues under stress conditions in intensive agricultural environments.

The pathogen thrives in anaerobic or microaerophilic conditions. It enters the plant through wounds caused by abiotic factors, insects, or during agricultural operations like pruning and transplanting. Once inside, the bacteria secrete enzymes that degrade the structural integrity of the plant cells, leading to tissue collapse.

This infection affects a variety of crops, primarily those grown in glasshouses or highly humid environments. It is often observed in vegetable seedlings and ornamental plants, where the lack of proper ventilation and poor sanitary conditions facilitate the rapid spread of the bacteria from one plant to another.

Symptoms of the infection include localized water-soaked lesions that progress into soft rot. In many cases, the affected area exhibits a distinct odor. Without timely intervention, the decay spreads through the vascular system, leading to rapid wilting and the total collapse of the plant structure.

Integrated pest and disease management is essential to combat this condition. Preventive measures include maintaining high hygiene standards, using certified disease-free planting material, and ensuring proper spacing between plants to reduce humidity. Chemical control should focus on approved bactericides, often applied preventively when environmental conditions favor the pathogen.
