Bifidobacteriosis is a group of bacterial infections associated with the genus Bifidobacterium, which, under specific environmental conditions, can act as opportunistic plant pathogens. While typically associated with animal microflora, these bacteria can invade plant tissues, causing systemic metabolic disturbances and severe physiological stress to the affected host plants.

The disease is classified as a bacterial infection that primarily targets the internal tissues of the plant. The pathogen enters the host through natural openings or mechanical injuries to the stems and roots, where it begins to multiply within the intercellular spaces, secreting enzymes that lead to the degradation of cell walls.

This pathology most frequently affects vegetable crops and greenhouse ornamental plants. The susceptibility of these cultures increases when they are exposed to prolonged high humidity and poor ventilation, which often leads to the weakening of the plant's natural immune barriers and makes them prone to colonization by opportunistic bacteria.

Recognizing the disease is crucial for effective management. Common symptoms include:

  • chlorotic spotting on leaves;
  • wilting and softening of stem tissues;
  • stunted development and retarded growth rates;
  • necrotic lesions appearing at the site of infection entry.

Effective prevention and protection require a comprehensive agronomic approach. Producers should focus on maintaining optimal soil moisture levels, avoiding excessive nitrogen fertilization that promotes lush but weak growth, and practicing strict greenhouse hygiene. In severe cases, the removal of diseased plants and the application of targeted antibacterial agents are necessary to prevent the further spread of the pathogen within the crop.
