The Bordetella genus consists of gram-negative bacteria that, while classically studied in animal pathology, have been identified as emerging pathogens in plant sciences. These bacteria are capable of acting as opportunistic agents that colonize the vascular tissues of various crops, leading to significant disruption of the plant's hydraulic system.
The disease is classified as a bacterial wilt or vascular bacteriosis. The pathogen Bordetella enters the plant, primarily through natural openings or mechanical wounds, and moves systemically within the xylem. By multiplying within the vessels, the bacteria restrict the flow of water and nutrients, which is the primary cause of the symptomatic wilting observed in infected plants.
A wide range of crops can be susceptible, particularly those in vegetable production. The pathogen often exploits environments with high humidity and moderate temperatures to establish infection. Factors such as poor irrigation management or the presence of insect vectors significantly increase the risk of disease transmission within a field or greenhouse facility.
Key symptoms of the disease include:
- progressive wilting of leaves during the hottest part of the day;
- yellowing and interveinal chlorosis;
- darkening of the vascular bundles visible upon cross-sectioning stems;
- water-soaked lesions that may progress to tissue necrosis;
- stunted growth and poor overall vigor of the plant.
Conditions favorable for the development of Bordetella include warm, humid weather and poor soil drainage. The bacteria thrive in environments where water film persists on plant surfaces or in the root zone. Effective spread occurs through contaminated water, infested soil, and equipment that has not been properly sanitized between field operations.
The economic impact of this disease can be devastating, leading to reduced yields and inferior crop quality. Because the infection is systemic and difficult to cure once established, the presence of these bacteria necessitates rigorous monitoring and rapid intervention to prevent widespread crop failure and loss of profitability.
Protection and preventive measures focus on integrated management strategies. Growers should prioritize the use of disease-free certified seeds or seedlings. Implementing crop rotation, ensuring proper soil drainage, and strictly sanitizing farm machinery are essential practices. Chemical control involves the application of copper-based bactericides, though prevention through biological and cultural practices remains the most reliable approach.
