This respiratory disease primarily affects young turkeys, causing substantial economic losses in the poultry industry through morbidity and impaired growth.

The causative agent is a Gram-negative, aerobic bacterium that specifically targets the ciliated epithelium of the upper respiratory tract. Transmission occurs via direct contact, contaminated water, litter, or equipment. The pathogen effectively adheres to the cilia, damaging the mucociliary apparatus and predisposing the birds to secondary infections.

Typical clinical signs include tracheal rales, sneezing, coughing, and ocular or nasal discharge. In severe cases, swelling of the infraorbital sinuses and behavioral changes such as lethargy are observed. The mortality rate can be high in young poults, and survivors often exhibit stunted growth and uneven development within the flock.

The development and spread of B. avium are heavily influenced by environmental stressors. Poor ventilation, overcrowding, high ammonia concentrations, and fluctuations in temperature significantly facilitate the colonization of the bacterium. Managing the environmental conditions within the poultry house is critical to reducing the incidence and severity of the disease.

Effective prevention and control measures are centered on robust biosecurity. This includes rigorous disinfection protocols, control of flock density, and maintaining optimal air quality. Vaccination plays a key role in management programs. Because the disease is highly contagious, early detection and immediate isolation of symptomatic birds are essential to limit the impact of an outbreak.
