Description

Willow watermark disease is a serious bacterial condition affecting willow trees, caused by the pathogen Brenneria salicis. This bacterium infects the xylem tissue of the tree, clogging the conductive vessels and preventing the flow of water and nutrients, which results in the characteristic symptoms of wilting and necrosis.

The disease primarily targets species of the genus Salix. It is particularly devastating in environments where susceptible varieties are grown in monocultures, such as biomass willow plantations. The pathogen can persist within the tree's vascular system, slowly weakening the plant over several growing seasons until it leads to branch death or complete tree failure.

Key symptoms include the development of a dark brown or black "watermark" staining in the wood, visible when a branch is cross-sectioned. Externally, the bark may exhibit cracks, sunken lesions, and sometimes the oozing of bacterial exudate during humid weather. Affected foliage often turns brown, shrivels, and remains attached to the twigs, giving the canopy an uneven and dying appearance.

The spread of Brenneria salicis is heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and rainfall, which facilitate the movement of bacteria. The pathogen typically enters the tree through wounds caused by pruning, storm damage, or frost cracks. Insect vectors and contaminated pruning equipment are also significant pathways for the pathogen to move from tree to tree within a plantation.

Management of watermark disease focuses on preventing the spread rather than curing existing infections. Growers should prioritize the following strategies:

  • Regular inspections to detect early symptoms, especially in susceptible cultivars.
  • Rigorous sanitary pruning, ensuring all infected wood is cut back to healthy tissue.
  • Sterilizing all pruning tools between cuts using an effective disinfectant to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Removing and destroying infected trees entirely to eliminate sources of inoculum.
  • Prioritizing the planting of resistant or tolerant willow varieties in areas where the disease is known to exist.
