Cacao red spot

Cacao red spot refers to a complex of fungal infections that manifest as characteristic reddish lesions on the pods of the cacao tree (Theobroma cacao). While often linked to broader physiological or pathological stress, this condition indicates the presence of pathogens that compromise the pod's outer layer and infect the developing seeds within.

The primary host for this disease is the cacao tree. The infection typically targets developing pods, which are highly susceptible due to their high water content and soft skin. Pathogens often exploit small surface lesions or insect bites to gain entry into the tissues, leading to systemic decay of the fruit.

The early symptoms of Cacao red spot include small, distinct reddish or maroon discolorations on the pod surface. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, darken into necrotic patches, and may cause the pod to shrivel or harden. In advanced stages, the internal pulp becomes discolored and prone to secondary mold colonization.

Environmental conditions such as high ambient humidity, heavy rainfall, and poor canopy airflow are the main drivers of disease spread. Spores thrive in warm, damp environments, allowing them to germinate rapidly on the moist surface of the pods. Dense shade and lack of field hygiene further facilitate the rapid cycle of infection.

The economic impact of this disease is significant, as it leads to high post-harvest losses and reduced quality of cocoa beans. Farmers must manage the disease to prevent total yield collapse, especially in high-density cultivation areas where the disease can spread from tree to tree with ease.
