It is critical to distinguish that Campylobacter species are not plant pathogens; they do not cause diseases in crops. Instead, they act as human pathogens that contaminate plant-based produce. Within the agricultural sector, the presence of these bacteria is viewed strictly as a food safety hazard rather than a condition affecting plant health or yields.

The primary agents, such as Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli, are zoonotic bacteria. They typically enter the agricultural environment via livestock manure, contaminated irrigation water, or wild animals entering fields. These bacteria utilize crops as a vector to reach human consumers, often residing on the surface of leafy greens, herbs, and soft fruits.

Because there are no symptomatic signs of infection on the plants—no yellowing, rot, or structural damage—crops appear perfectly healthy to the naked eye. This lack of visible symptoms makes the presence of Campylobacter particularly insidious, as there is no outward indicator for farmers to detect the contamination during the harvesting process.

Environmental conditions play a major role in the survival of these pathogens. Campylobacter thrives in cool, moist, and low-oxygen environments. In the field, heavy rainfall or high-humidity periods significantly increase the likelihood of bacterial survival on plant foliage. Conversely, exposure to direct, harsh sunlight and dry conditions will significantly reduce the bacterial population.

Management strategies focus on preventing introduction into the growing environment. Effective practices include:

  • Rigorous testing of water sources for irrigation.
  • Composting or treating manure correctly to kill pathogens before application.
  • Implementing wildlife deterrents to prevent field access.
  • Applying strict Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) to ensure hygiene from harvest to distribution.
