Candidatus Arsenophonus refers to a complex of phytoplasmas acting as obligate intracellular pathogens within plant tissues. These bacteria inhabit the phloem sieve elements, where they interfere with the translocation of photoassimilates, eventually causing severe stunting and physiological collapse of the host plant.

A wide range of crops is susceptible to this phytoplasma, including important vegetables, legumes, and several horticultural species. Given its systemic nature, the pathogen effectively colonizes the host's vascular system, making the infection permanent and often leading to total crop loss if not managed early.

Symptoms typically manifest as chlorosis, yellowing of leaves, internode shortening, and proliferation of auxiliary buds leading to the "witches' broom" effect. Flowers often exhibit phyllody, where floral parts turn into leaf-like structures, rendering the plant infertile and preventing the development of viable fruit or seeds.

The transmission of this pathogen is primarily mediated by sap-sucking insects, such as leafhoppers and psyllids. Environmental conditions favoring the rapid expansion of vector populations, combined with the presence of perennial weed reservoirs, significantly increase the risk of disease transmission within agricultural fields during the growing season.

Management strategies focus on breaking the disease cycle by controlling insect vectors through integrated pest management (IPM) practices. It is essential to implement strict quarantine measures for planting material, prioritize the removal of symptomatic plants, and ensure that field surroundings are free from host weeds that harbor the phytoplasma throughout the winter months.
