Description

Candidatus liberibacter represents a genus of phloem-limited bacteria that are responsible for several devastating plant diseases globally. These bacteria cannot be grown in culture, making them challenging to study and identify without advanced molecular diagnostic techniques like PCR. They are classified as systemic pathogens that interfere with the transport of carbohydrates and essential nutrients within the plant host.

The host range is diverse, primarily affecting Rutaceae (citrus family) and Solanaceae (potato, tomato, pepper, and tobacco). In citrus, the disease is commonly known as Huanglongbing (HLB) or citrus greening, while in Solanaceae, it is associated with conditions like "zebra chip" disease in potatoes, characterized by dark strips appearing in tubers after frying.

Symptoms are often systemic and mimic nutritional deficiencies. Common indicators include yellow shoots, asymmetrical mottling of leaves, and significant fruit drop. Infected fruits often remain small, green, and taste bitter, rendering them unsuitable for commercial use. Solanaceous plants exhibit leaf curling, stunting, and an overall decline that leads to severe yield losses in both field and greenhouse environments.

Transmission occurs through insect vectors, typically psyllids (jumping plant lice), which acquire the bacteria while feeding on infected phloem. Once infected, the psyllid remains a carrier for the rest of its life, effectively spreading the pathogen as it moves from plant to plant. Additionally, the movement of infected nursery stock, grafting materials, and cuttings facilitates the spread of the pathogen to previously unaffected geographical areas.

Management of Candidatus liberibacter is primarily preventive. There is no known cure for infected plants; therefore, aggressive removal and destruction of symptomatic trees are necessary to reduce the inoculum load. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs must focus on suppressing vector populations, using high-quality disease-free certified nursery stock, and implementing strict quarantine regulations to prevent further spread across borders.
