Description
Phytoplasmosis is a serious systemic plant disease caused by Candidatus phytoplasma, a group of specialized, cell-wall-deficient bacteria. These pathogens colonize the phloem tissues of their hosts, interfering with the translocation of sugars and essential nutrients, which leads to the collapse of the plant's physiological functions.
The host range for phytoplasmas is incredibly diverse, encompassing hundreds of plant species. Significant economic losses are reported in major crops including potatoes, tomatoes, grapevines, coconuts, and various fruit trees. Ornamental plants are also frequently affected, leading to loss of aesthetic and market value.
Symptoms of infection are highly distinct and often include the phenomenon known as "witches' broom," characterized by excessive proliferation of stunted, thin branches. Other common signs include phyllody (the transformation of floral parts into leaf-like structures), generalized yellowing or reddening of foliage, and overall dwarfism of the infected plant.
Development and spread are entirely dependent on insect vectors, primarily sap-sucking hemipterans such as leafhoppers, planthoppers, and psyllids. The bacteria replicate within the vector's salivary glands after feeding on infected tissues, allowing the insect to transmit the pathogen to healthy plants for the rest of its lifespan.
Management strategies focus on breaking the disease cycle, as no chemical cure exists for infected plants. Essential practices include the implementation of rigorous quarantine measures, the use of certified disease-free propagation material, removal of infected host plants, and effective vector control programs to reduce insect populations in agricultural fields.
