Description

Cardiobacteriosis is a bacterial plant disease caused by microorganisms of the Cardiobacteriales order. These pathogens specifically target plant vascular tissues, leading to systemic infections that significantly impair the host plant's ability to transport water and essential nutrients effectively.

The causative agents are Gram-negative bacteria that infiltrate the plant through natural openings such as stomata or wounds caused by mechanical damage or pests. Once inside, the bacteria proliferate within the xylem, producing enzymes and toxins that cause tissue necrosis and physiological collapse.

Visible symptoms typically appear as sudden wilting of the foliage, yellowing (chlorosis) of leaf margins, and the development of dark, water-soaked lesions. In advanced stages, the vascular bundles inside the stems show internal browning, which serves as a diagnostic sign for vascular bacterial diseases.

The spread of the infection is heavily influenced by environmental factors, particularly high humidity and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 28°C. Rain splash, irrigation runoff, and contaminated farm equipment are the primary vectors facilitating the movement of the bacteria from infected plant debris to healthy crops.

Management of the disease focuses on preventative strategies such as crop rotation and the destruction of infected plant material. Chemical control relies on copper-based bactericides and biological agents that inhibit bacterial growth. Integrated pest management is essential to reduce secondary infection paths caused by insect vectors.
