The genus Cellulomonas comprises Gram-positive bacteria primarily recognized for their robust cellulolytic activity. While largely beneficial for soil organic matter turnover, certain members of this genus are associated with plant tissue decay, acting as facultative pathogens when the plant's natural defenses are compromised by abiotic stress or mechanical wounding.

The primary hosts for these pathogens include a variety of vegetable crops and succulent ornamental plants. The bacteria colonize the rhizosphere and gain entry through root hairs or wounds, where they secrete cellulase and other extracellular enzymes that hydrolyze the plant cell wall, leading to necrotic lesions and tissue collapse.

Visible symptoms include wilting, stunted growth, and soft rot at the base of the stem or within the root system. As the infection progresses, the tissues lose their structural integrity and appear macerated. In humid conditions, the affected areas may develop a slimy texture accompanied by a distinct odor caused by rapid cell wall disintegration.

Environmental conditions favoring the development of Cellulomonas-related infections include high soil moisture levels, poor drainage, and high temperature fluctuations. Such conditions encourage bacterial proliferation in the soil solution, significantly increasing the probability of root infection and systemic damage to the host plant.

Management and prevention focus on maintaining optimal soil health and plant vigor. Growers are advised to enhance soil drainage, implement strict crop rotation practices to reduce inoculum build-up, and ensure minimal physical damage during cultivation. If symptoms occur, the application of targeted bactericides and the removal of severely infected plants are essential to mitigate the spread of the pathogen.
