Chamaesiphon is a genus of cyanobacteria that significantly impacts agricultural environments, particularly in hydroponics and aeroponics. While not a direct plant parasite, it acts as an agent of biofouling, creating competitive conditions that deprive root systems of essential nutrients and oxygen, which effectively constitutes a physiological disorder in cultivated crops.

The causative agent is a unicellular, colonial cyanobacterium that attaches itself to firm substrates. Its development is characterized by rapid colonization in environments rich in dissolved nutrients, particularly under conditions of high light exposure and fluctuating pH levels. These microorganisms can rapidly clog irrigation pipes, filters, and emitters.

Agricultural crops grown in protected environments are the primary targets for this type of infestation. Leafy greens, herbs, and fruiting vegetables in nutrient film technique (NFT) systems or deep water culture are highly susceptible. The presence of Chamaesiphon disrupts the rhizospheric balance, hindering root respiration and nutrient uptake.

The symptoms of infestation are distinct: a thick, slimy, blue-green or brownish layer develops on the roots and the interior of irrigation lines. Affected plants typically exhibit stunted growth, wilting during peak daylight hours, and chlorosis. If left unmanaged, the root system will eventually succumb to decay caused by opportunistic bacterial pathogens taking advantage of the weakened state.

Prevention and control strategies focus on rigorous sanitation and environmental manipulation. Key measures include:

  • Opaque light-shielding for all reservoirs and tubing to prevent photosynthesis of the colonies.
  • Installation of inline UV-C sterilization systems to neutralize cyanobacterial spores.
  • Regular cleaning of systems using hydrogen peroxide-based sanitizers.
  • Optimizing nutrient concentration to prevent excessive runoff and eutrophication within the system.
