Chromatiales refers to an order of purple sulfur bacteria that are predominantly phototrophic. While they are not classified as primary plant pathogens, their presence in high concentrations is often indicative of unfavorable soil conditions that can negatively influence crop development and overall agricultural productivity.
These bacteria are typically found in environments with low oxygen levels, such as waterlogged soils, paddy fields, or poorly drained irrigation systems. They thrive by oxidizing hydrogen sulfide to produce sulfur or sulfates, a process that is characteristic of anaerobic biological environments.
The impact on crops is primarily indirect, resulting from the accumulation of hydrogen sulfide in the rhizosphere, which is toxic to most terrestrial plants. Symptoms include chlorosis, stunting, necrosis of the root system, and increased susceptibility to secondary pathogenic infections due to the weakened state of the plant.
Environmental conditions that favor the development of Chromatiales include high water tables, lack of proper soil aeration, and the accumulation of organic matter that promotes anaerobic decomposition. The presence of purple or reddish films on the soil surface is a clear indicator of these conditions and warns farmers of potential stress for their crops.
