Description
Chromobacteriosis is a plant disease caused by the bacterium Chromobacterium violaceum. This soil-borne Gram-negative bacterium acts as an opportunistic pathogen, capable of infecting various plant tissues and vascular systems under conditions of high temperature and moisture, leading to systemic weakness and tissue necrosis.
The host range includes a variety of agricultural crops, particularly vegetables and legumes. The infection typically initiates through wounds caused by insect feeding, improper pruning, or environmental factors such as hail, allowing the pathogen to enter the plant's internal environment and colonize healthy tissues.
Characteristic symptoms include the development of dark necrotic lesions on leaves, stems, and fruits. A hallmark of this disease is the production of violacein, a purple pigment synthesized by the bacterium, which often gives the infected plant material a distinct violet or dark-colored appearance, followed by soft rot and foul-smelling exudates.
Disease progression is highly dependent on environmental conditions. Warm weather (25–30°C) coupled with high humidity or waterlogged soil creates an ideal niche for Chromobacterium multiplication. The pathogen spreads easily through splashing rain, irrigation water, and contaminated agricultural machinery, making rapid field sanitation essential.
Management and preventive strategies are focused on limiting bacterial spread and strengthening plant health. Key measures involve:
- Implementing strict crop rotation to reduce soil inoculum.
- Ensuring adequate soil drainage to prevent stagnant water.
- Sanitizing pruning tools to prevent cross-contamination.
- Applying preventive sprays of copper-based bactericides or biocontrol agents where permitted.
