Chroococcus is a genus of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) that can colonize plant surfaces under specific environmental conditions. In agronomy, while often considered an environmental contaminant, these organisms can function as epiphytic pests, severely impacting the health and productivity of greenhouse and garden crops.

These organisms primarily affect greenhouse vegetables, nursery seedlings, and moisture-loving foliage plants. They thrive in environments where air circulation is restricted and humidity is consistently high, forming visible colonies on leaves, stems, and the soil surface surrounding the plant base.

The primary symptom of infection is the development of a bluish-green or slimy, gelatinous film on the plant's surface. This film creates a barrier that prevents the plant from absorbing adequate light and restricts the gas exchange necessary for photosynthesis and respiration, leading to yellowing and stunted growth.

The development and spread of Chroococcus are driven by stagnant moisture and high humidity levels. The organism propagates through water splashes, contaminated irrigation tools, and air currents. Once established, it can rapidly cover large areas of the foliage, especially in environments where plants are kept densely packed.

The harmful impact is significant because the biofilm formed by the cyanobacteria can damage the plant's cuticle and create a micro-environment favorable for secondary fungal pathogens. By inhibiting transpiration and gas exchange, the plant's natural immune system is weakened, leading to increased susceptibility to other diseases.
