Chroococcus turgidus is a unicellular species of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) that often acts as a significant factor in agricultural soil degradation. While it is not a direct plant pathogen, its prolific growth on the soil surface causes biological and physical conditions that inhibit the growth and development of various crops.

This organism typically thrives in agricultural environments with standing water, particularly in rice paddies. It is also frequently found in intensive greenhouse farming, where high humidity, irrigation-induced moisture, and constant light exposure facilitate the formation of dense algal colonies.

The primary symptom of an infestation is the emergence of a slimy, dark green or brownish crust on the soil surface. This layer effectively seals the soil, preventing oxygen exchange with the root zone, which leads to root hypoxia, nutrient absorption failure, and subsequent stunting of the cultivated plants.

The development of Chroococcus turgidus is favored by conditions involving high moisture content, consistent light, and an accumulation of nitrogen and phosphorus in the topsoil layer. Temperatures ranging from +20°C to +30°C provide the optimal metabolic speed for the organism to rapidly colonize bare soil areas.

The impact of this organism is primarily seen in yield reduction due to the physical barrier it creates and the alteration of the soil micro-environment. Effective management and prevention strategies include:

  • Improving drainage systems to prevent persistent waterlogging.
  • Adjusting fertilization regimes to prevent nutrient runoff and accumulation on the surface.
