Chrysanthemum yellows is a severe plant disease caused by phytoplasmas, which are specialized bacteria lacking a cell wall. These pathogens inhabit the plant's phloem, effectively hijacking the nutrient transport system and causing systemic metabolic disruption throughout the entire host organism.

This disease affects a broad range of Asteraceae species, including various chrysanthemum varieties and several common weeds. Because the pathogen can survive in wild plant reservoirs, it represents a constant threat to commercial nurseries and home gardens alike, requiring vigilant monitoring of the surrounding ecosystem.

Key diagnostic features include systemic yellowing (chlorosis) of the leaves, stunted growth, and the development of dense, broom-like clusters of distorted shoots. Flowers are frequently severely affected, showing color changes, phyllody (where floral parts turn into leaf-like structures), and significant size reduction.

The transmission of the disease occurs through insect vectors, most notably leafhoppers. As these insects feed on an infected plant, they acquire the phytoplasma and introduce it into the next healthy plant they visit. Warm, dry environmental conditions significantly accelerate the activity of these vectors, thereby increasing the rate of infection transmission.

Management strategy centers on vector control and sanitation. It is essential to use certified disease-free cuttings and to keep the growing area free of weeds that could serve as alternative hosts. Once an infection is detected, the only effective method to stop the spread is the immediate removal and destruction of the symptomatic plants to prevent further insect transmission.
