Description
The causative agent of the disease is bacteria of the genus Chryseobacterium, which are Gram-negative aerobic microorganisms. In agronomy, this pathogen is recognized as an opportunistic agent, often acting as a secondary infection when host plants are weakened or have sustained mechanical damage from insects or agricultural practices.
This genus of bacteria affects a wide range of agricultural and ornamental crops, including vegetables, berries, and flowers. Chryseobacterium is most frequently recorded in greenhouse environments and hydroponic systems, where high humidity and warm temperatures provide the optimal environment for the rapid colonization of host tissues.
Symptoms typically manifest as systemic rots, softening of stem tissues, yellowing of foliage, and necrosis of the root system. Unlike highly specialized pathogens, these bacteria destroy plant tissues rapidly by secreting specific enzymes, which can lead to the total collapse and death of the plant within a very short timeframe if left untreated.
The development and spread of the disease are driven by overwatering, poor drainage, and temperatures exceeding 22-25 degrees Celsius. The bacteria are transmitted through contaminated tools, irrigation water, infested plant debris, and insects that disrupt the plant surface, providing an entry point for the bacterial cells to invade the vascular system.
