Description

Clavibacter is a genus of Gram-positive bacteria that causes severe systemic diseases in a wide range of plants, commonly referred to as bacterial canker or bacterial wilt. These pathogens are highly contagious and primarily affect the vascular system of the host, leading to wilting, necrosis, and eventual plant death. They pose a significant threat to global agriculture, particularly in greenhouses and intensive farming.

The host range of Clavibacter species is diverse. Clavibacter michiganensis is infamous for targeting tomatoes, causing bacterial canker, while other subspecies are responsible for ring rot in potatoes or wilt in grasses. The bacteria occupy the xylem vessels, where they multiply rapidly and produce biofilms that block water transport, resulting in rapid physiological decline.

Key symptoms include wilting of leaves, starting from the lower parts and progressing upwards. Infected stems often show longitudinal cracking, internal browning of the vascular tissues, and in some cases, hollowness. On fruits, the classic sign is the appearance of small, white, circular spots, often with a dark brown or black center, frequently described as the "bird's eye" symptom.

Environmental factors such as high relative humidity and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 28°C are optimal for the development of Clavibacter infections. The bacteria spread through contaminated seeds, infected irrigation water, tools used for pruning or staking, and by physical contact between healthy and diseased plants. The pathogen can survive for several seasons in crop residues or the soil.

Management of this disease relies heavily on strict sanitation and preventive measures. Crop rotation is essential, as is the use of pathogen-free certified seeds. In greenhouse environments, disinfecting tools with appropriate chemicals and controlling water splash are critical to preventing outbreaks. Once the infection is identified, immediate removal and destruction of affected plants are necessary to prevent the pathogen from spreading further.
