Description

The causative agent of this disease is Closterovirus flavicarotae, a member of the Closterovirus genus. This systemic viral infection disrupts the plant's vascular system, hindering the transport of essential nutrients and sugars to the roots, which directly impacts the quality and yield of the harvest.

The primary host plant is carrot (Daucus carota). The virus can also persist in various wild species of the Apiaceae family, which act as secondary hosts and reservoirs that maintain the viral load in the ecosystem throughout the growing season.

Symptoms of the infection typically begin with chlorosis at the leaf margins, gradually spreading inward. Key identification signs include:

  • Yellowing or reddish discoloration of foliage;
  • Stunting and inhibited growth of the root system;
  • Deformation and curling of leaves;
  • Reduced crop volume and poor commercial quality.

The virus is transmitted by insect vectors, specifically aphids such as Cavariella aegopodii. The transmission mechanism is persistent, meaning that once an aphid acquires the virus from an infected plant, it remains a carrier and can transmit the pathogen to healthy plants for an extended period.
