Clostridiosis is a bacterial disease affecting various plant species, associated with the activity of anaerobic bacteria from the Clostridiaceae family. These pathogens inhabit the soil and typically enter plant tissues through wounds or natural openings, leading to tissue degradation and necrotic processes.

The disease primarily affects root vegetables, tubers, and various greenhouse crops. Plants like potatoes, carrots, and onions are particularly susceptible, especially when cultivated in dense, poorly aerated soils. The bacteria secrete aggressive enzymes that break down plant cell walls, causing structural collapse.

Symptoms typically manifest as rapid development of soft, watery rot. Affected plant tissues lose their firmness, discolor, and emit a foul odor caused by the anaerobic breakdown of organic matter. In advanced stages, the entire plant organ may turn into a mushy, liquid state, making it unusable and dangerous for surrounding healthy tissues.

Development and spread are strongly favored by high soil moisture content and oxygen deficiency. Poorly drained soil, heavy rainfall, and inadequate air circulation in storage facilities act as primary triggers. These conditions create the anaerobic environment required for Clostridiaceae to thrive and colonize host tissues.

Effective control strategies focus on integrated pest management and hygiene. Key measures include improving field drainage, selecting well-drained soil sites, and ensuring proper ventilation during storage. Removing and destroying infected plant debris is crucial to prevent the build-up of bacterial inoculum for the next growing season.
