Description

The causative agent of this plant pathology is the bacterium Clostridium pasteurianum. It is a gram-positive, anaerobic organism predominantly found in various soil types worldwide. While it is naturally beneficial for nitrogen fixation, in specific agricultural contexts, it can turn into a pathogen that causes rapid tissue decay under anaerobic conditions.

Various crops can be affected, particularly those involving high-moisture environments such as root vegetables and succulent fruits. The bacterium primarily targets tissues in contact with poorly drained, compacted soil. Once the structural integrity of the plant cell wall is compromised, the infection spreads rapidly, leading to tissue degradation.

Symptoms of the infection typically include soft rot accompanied by a pungent odor and tissue discoloration. Infected plant parts turn brown and mushy, leading to a complete loss of crop quality. In the field, affected plants show signs of wilting and necrosis, which makes them highly susceptible to secondary invaders and total yield loss.

The development and spread of Clostridium pasteurianum are heavily dependent on soil environmental factors. Anaerobic conditions caused by flooding, waterlogging, or severe soil compaction favor the survival and multiplication of this bacterium. Insufficient aeration in the root zone acts as the primary catalyst for the disease outbreak.

To effectively manage and prevent the disease, farmers must focus on modifying the growing environment. Essential protective measures include:

  • Improving soil drainage systems to prevent waterlogging.
  • Regular soil aeration through proper tillage practices.
  • Sanitation, including the removal of infected debris after harvest.
  • Monitoring soil pH and moisture levels to inhibit anaerobic activity.
