Description

Clover phyllody is a serious plant disease caused by a phytoplasma, specifically Clover phyllody phytoplasma, which belongs to the 16SrI group. These pathogens are wall-less bacteria that reside within the phloem tissues of the host plant, disrupting the translocation of photoassimilates and plant hormones.

The disease primarily affects legumes, especially clover species, but also impacts a range of other crops and wild plants. Because it is a systemic infection, the pathogen spreads throughout the entire vascular system, rendering the plant incapable of normal development and seed production.

The hallmark symptom of this condition is the transformation of floral organs into green, leaf-like structures, a phenomenon known as phyllody. Other visible signs include:

  • stunting and reduced internode length;
  • yellowing (chlorosis) of the foliage;
  • proliferation of axillary buds leading to a witch's broom appearance;
  • complete sterility of the affected flowers.

Transmission of the clover phyllody phytoplasma occurs through insect vectors, most notably various species of leafhoppers. These insects acquire the phytoplasma while feeding on infected plants and subsequently inoculate healthy plants during the feeding process after a latent incubation period within the insect's body.

Managing clover phyllody requires an integrated pest management approach focused on the vector. Key preventive measures include removing weed reservoirs that harbor the pathogen, applying insecticides to control leafhopper populations, and establishing buffer zones around sensitive seed crops to reduce the risk of secondary infections.
