Coccochloris is a genus of cyanobacteria that, when occurring in high densities, can act as a stressor for various agricultural crops. These organisms often manifest as a slimy, gelatinous biofilm on plant surfaces and growth substrates. While not a classical fungal disease, the physiological impact of this colonization can significantly impede the development of sensitive plant species.

This biological object primarily affects plants grown in greenhouses, vertical farms, and hydroponic systems. Seedlings and young ornamental plants are particularly vulnerable. The biofilm created by these cyanobacteria physically coats leaves and stems, significantly reducing the efficiency of photosynthesis and gas exchange, which weakens the plant and stunts its growth.

The key symptoms of Coccochloris presence include a visible blue-green, slippery layer on the soil surface, pots, or lower leaves of the crop. In advanced stages, this layer can harden into a crust, sealing the substrate and preventing roots from obtaining necessary oxygen, which frequently leads to secondary root issues and nutrient uptake blockage.

Development and spread are driven by high humidity, poor air circulation, and light exposure in nutrient-rich environments. Environments that utilize fertigation with high phosphorus and nitrogen levels are particularly susceptible to rapid cyanobacteria blooms. Once a colony is established, it can persist indefinitely unless the microclimate is drastically altered.

Effective management and prevention strategies include several critical steps:

  • Improving ventilation and lowering relative humidity levels.
  • Implementing precise irrigation to avoid water stagnation at the base of plants.
  • Regular sanitation of benches, trays, and floors using appropriate disinfectants.
  • Monitoring irrigation water for nutrient spikes.
  • Utilizing top-dressing with sand or specialized mulch to keep the substrate surface dry.
