Coelosphaerium is a genus of colonial cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) that often acts as a biological pollutant in agricultural water reservoirs. These organisms are highly significant in limnology and agricultural water management due to their ability to trigger rapid water blooms, which compromise water quality for irrigation purposes.
The causative agent consists of small, spherical cells organized into colonies enveloped by a mucilaginous matrix. As photosynthetic prokaryotes, they thrive in nutrient-rich environments, utilizing phosphorus and nitrogen to sustain rapid population growth, often dominating the aquatic ecosystem during the summer months.
Affected systems primarily include irrigation ponds, reservoirs, and slow-moving canals. While the bacteria do not infect plants directly as traditional fungal pathogens do, the secondary impacts—such as the clogging of irrigation nozzles, reduction of dissolved oxygen, and the release of toxins—pose severe risks to high-value horticultural and field crops.
Development and spread are favored by eutrophication, temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C, and minimal water turbulence. Symptoms include a distinct turquoise or green coloration of the water, a foul, musty odor, and the accumulation of thick, foamy mats on the surface, which indicate a high concentration of biomass.
Management and protective measures include:
- Implementing buffer strips around water bodies to intercept fertilizer runoff.
- Utilizing physical aeration systems to disrupt colony stability.
- Applying specific algaecides approved for agricultural water use.
- Encouraging the growth of competitive aquatic plants to limit nutrient availability.
The economic harm caused by Coelosphaerium is twofold: it physically disrupts irrigation hardware and introduces cyanotoxins into the water supply. Long-term exposure to these toxins can impair soil microbial health and cause phytotoxic stress in sensitive crops, potentially leading to reduced yields and inferior produce quality.
