Coelosphaerium kuetzingianum is a genus of colonial cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) often associated with the bloom phenomena in freshwater reservoirs. In agricultural practice, this microorganism serves as a key indicator of water quality degradation, as its presence can compromise the safety and health of crops irrigated with contaminated water sources.
As a biological entity, it consists of spherical colonies embedded in a mucilaginous matrix. While Coelosphaerium kuetzingianum does not cause direct plant tissue infections, its secondary metabolites (cyanotoxins) can be absorbed by the root systems of crops, potentially hindering nutrient uptake and overall plant vigor when the irrigation water is heavily polluted.
Visual signs of an infestation include a dense, green, or blue-green surface scum on the water and a noticeable, unpleasant, musty odor.
