Description

The Comamonadaceae family encompasses a diverse group of Gram-negative bacteria, some of which are notorious plant pathogens. Within this family, the genus Acidovorax is particularly significant in agricultural pathology, as it is responsible for systemic infections and necrotic lesions in a variety of essential food and industrial crops.

These bacteria typically invade plant tissues through stomata or wounds caused by wind, insect feeding, or mechanical damage. Once inside, they proliferate within the intercellular spaces or the vascular system, disrupting normal physiological functions and causing localized tissue death or systemic wilting of the infected plants.

The disease symptoms include water-soaked lesions that progress into necrotic spots or streaks, often surrounded by chlorotic halos. In advanced stages of the infection, particularly under high humidity, the bacteria can exude an opaque slime on the leaf or stem surfaces, which serves as a major source for secondary dispersal via water splash, tools, or vectors.

Environmental conditions such as high humidity and optimal temperatures for bacterial multiplication are critical for the spread of these pathogens. The bacteria can persist in crop debris and infected seeds, enabling them to survive from one growing season to the next, which complicates standard management programs in infected fields.
