Description
Cotton phyllody is a serious plant disease caused by specialized bacteria known as phytoplasmas. These pathogens colonize the phloem tissue of the plant, disrupting the transport of nutrients and hormones. The disease is classified as a phytoplasmoses and poses a significant threat to cotton production globally, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions.
The primary host for this pathogen is the cotton plant (Gossypium spp.), but the disease can also persist in various alternative weed hosts within the Malvaceae family. These weeds act as reservoirs, allowing the pathogen to survive during periods when cotton is not being grown and providing a source of inoculum for the next planting season.
The most characteristic symptom of cotton phyllody is the abnormal transformation of floral organs into leafy structures, a process known as phyllody. Affected plants exhibit stunted growth, excessive branching, and shortened internodes, creating a bushy appearance. Because the flowers are sterile and leaf-like, the plant fails to produce bolls, resulting in total yield loss for infected individuals.
The transmission of cotton phyllody is entirely dependent on insect vectors, primarily leafhoppers (e.g., Orosius albicinctus). When a leafhopper feeds on an infected plant, it ingests the phytoplasmas, which then multiply within the insect. Once the incubation period is over, the leafhopper can transmit the disease to healthy cotton plants throughout the rest of its life, facilitating rapid spread across fields.
Integrated pest management (IPM) is the best strategy for mitigating cotton phyllody:
- Implementing strict weed control programs to remove alternate hosts around the field borders.
- Monitoring leafhopper populations and applying selective insecticides during the early growth stages to break the transmission cycle.
- Utilizing resistant or tolerant cotton varieties where available.
- Rogueing out and destroying infected plants as soon as symptoms appear to prevent local spread.
- Maintaining proper field sanitation and avoiding close proximity to crops that share the same insect vectors.
