Coxiella (genus Coxiella) consists of Gram-negative bacteria primarily recognized for their intracellular parasitic nature. While frequently studied in the context of zoonotic diseases, in phytopathology, they are analyzed as unique bacterial agents capable of colonizing the vascular systems of various plants, leading to systemic stress and metabolic disruption.
The disease is classified as a vascular bacteriosis. The core mechanism of Coxiella involvement in plant pathology is its ability to reside within the plant cells, effectively evading the host's primary immune defenses. This stealth mode of infection allows the pathogen to multiply until the vascular tissue is significantly impaired.
The host range includes a variety of economically important vegetable and cereal crops. Infection occurs through various vectors, including mechanical damage and insect feeding, which introduce the pathogen into the plant's vascular system, subsequently spreading it through the xylem to distant parts of the plant.
Symptoms are often subtle in the early stages, manifesting as leaf chlorosis, stunted growth, and a general lack of vigor. As the conditions for development become favorable—typically high humidity and moderate temperatures—the bacterial population increases, leading to more severe symptoms such as vascular browning and wilting.
