Coxiellosis is a group of infectious plant diseases caused by bacteria belonging to the Coxiellaceae family. In agronomic practice, these pathogens are recognized as intracellular parasites that primarily colonize the vascular tissues of host plants. Their activity disrupts water and nutrient transport, leading to the gradual decline of the crop's physiological state.
These diseases affect a wide variety of agricultural crops, including vegetables and industrial plants. The pathogen's ability to persist in plant debris and soil makes it a significant threat to sustainable farming. Identifying the disease at an early stage is crucial, as the systemic nature of the infection makes it difficult to cure once established.
Symptoms of coxiellosis typically manifest as leaf chlorosis, wilting of the stems, and marginal necrosis. In advanced stages, the plants exhibit stunted growth, reduced leaf area, and poor fruit formation. A diagnostic sign is often the browning of vascular bundles, which can be observed upon cross-sectioning the stem near the base of the plant.
The development and spread of these bacteria are favored by high humidity and moderate to warm temperatures, which facilitate bacterial multiplication and movement. The transmission cycle relies heavily on contaminated equipment, soil movement, and insect vectors, such as aphids and leafhoppers, which transmit the pathogen while feeding on infected sap.
Economic damage caused by coxiellosis can be substantial, resulting in significant yield losses and reduced crop marketability. Effective management and prevention strategies include:
- Using only certified, pathogen-free seeds and planting material.
- Implementing strict crop rotation protocols to prevent pathogen accumulation.
- Sanitizing all farming tools, machinery, and irrigation systems.

- Rogueing out infected plants immediately upon detection to reduce primary inoculum.
