Description
Cranberry false blossom is a devastating disease caused by a phytoplasma, which severely impacts the reproductive capabilities of cranberry plants. Once a plant is infected, it typically stops producing viable berries, leading to total yield loss in affected sections of the bog.
The disease is transmitted by the blunt-nosed leafhopper (Chlorotettix balli). These insects acquire the phytoplasma by feeding on infected plants and then transmit it to healthy ones during subsequent feeding sessions. Since the pathogen colonizes the plant's phloem, it becomes distributed throughout the entire plant system.
Key symptoms include the transformation of floral parts into vegetative, leafy, and greenish or reddish structures. Flowers often develop an upright, distorted appearance, resembling a witches' broom. The lack of proper fruit development is the most reliable diagnostic feature for growers during the growing season.
Development and spread are closely linked to the population density of the vector. Environmental conditions that favor the survival and reproduction of leafhoppers, such as mild winters and an abundance of weedy hosts surrounding the bog, significantly increase the risk of disease transmission across the field.
Management focuses on breaking the disease cycle. This includes immediate roguing of symptomatic plants to prevent the pathogen from reaching the vector, and targeted insecticide applications to minimize the blunt-nosed leafhopper population. Maintaining clean boundaries around the bog is also essential to prevent external infestation.
