The genus Cupriavidus consists of gram-negative, rod-shaped bacteria that act as significant plant pathogens. These bacteria are recognized primarily for causing vascular wilting diseases, which interfere with the plant's hydraulic system by colonizing the xylem, ultimately leading to the total collapse of the host plant tissues.
A wide range of crops is susceptible to this pathogen, with a particular impact on Solanaceous species such as tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, and eggplants. Given the systemic nature of the infection, entire field crops or greenhouse productions can be decimated within a short timeframe if the pathogen is introduced and the environmental conditions favor its proliferation.
The disease manifestation is characterized by sudden wilting of the foliage during the day, with partial recovery occurring during cooler nocturnal hours. As the infection progresses, the plant loses the ability to recover, and the leaves become yellow and brittle. A diagnostic sign is the presence of a milky white bacterial ooze when a section of the stem is suspended in clear water.
Environmental factors play a decisive role in the spread of Cupriavidus. Warm soil temperatures and high moisture content are optimal for bacterial multiplication. The pathogen can survive for extended periods in contaminated soil, weeds, and agricultural runoff, making it highly persistent and difficult to eradicate once it is established in a specific location.
Management strategies focus on prevention and sanitation rather than chemical treatment, as few bactericides offer long-term control. Essential actions include implementing strict hygiene protocols for equipment, improving soil drainage to prevent stagnant moisture, adopting long-term crop rotation cycles, and selecting resistant cultivars developed through breeding programs to mitigate the impact of the disease.
