The disease is caused by the bacterium Curtobacterium aurantiacum, a gram-positive microorganism known to inhabit the vascular tissues of host plants. This pathogen disrupts the internal water and nutrient transport systems, causing a syndrome often categorized under the umbrella of bacterial wilts. Its presence can lead to significant physiological stress in the infected host.

It affects a broad range of agricultural crops, including various vegetables, grains, and ornamental species. The bacterium is highly adaptable and can colonize various plant tissues, making it a persistent challenge in diverse agricultural environments. Vulnerability increases significantly when crops are grown under intensive monoculture conditions without proper phytosanitary protocols.

Primary symptoms include progressive wilting, leaf chlorosis, and the eventual death of the affected plant parts.
