Cylindrospermum is a genus of filamentous, nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria commonly found in wet soils and aquatic environments. While these organisms contribute to natural soil nitrogen levels, their uncontrolled proliferation in agricultural systems creates significant biological interference with crop development.
This genus primarily affects rice crops grown under paddy conditions. The biological activity of these cyanobacteria often results in the formation of dense, gelatinous mats on the surface of the soil or water, which effectively creates an impenetrable layer that disrupts gas exchange for the crop's root system.
Common symptoms of colonization include the emergence of vibrant blue-green, dark, or slimy films on the soil surface. When these mats cover seedlings, they prevent essential oxygen uptake. The subsequent physiological stress leads to yellowing of leaves, stunting, and in severe cases, the necrosis of young plants due to oxygen deprivation at the soil-water interface.
Growth conditions for these organisms are driven by waterlogging, sufficient sunlight exposure, and elevated nutrient levels, particularly phosphorus. As temperatures rise between 20°C and 30°C, the growth rate of the colonies accelerates significantly, making irrigation management the critical factor in preventing large-scale outbreaks.
Effective management and prevention strategies include several key agricultural practices:
- Periodic drainage of fields to interrupt the growth cycle of the algae.
- Application of specialized algicides tailored for the affected crop sector.
- Nutrient management, specifically monitoring phosphate runoff into the water supply.
- Mechanical disruption of the surface film to encourage better aeration of the soil environment.
