Cytophaga is a genus of bacteria responsible for specific bacterial infections in plants, often manifesting as soft rot diseases. These organisms are known as gliding bacteria and possess powerful enzymes capable of breaking down cellulose and pectin. By degrading the structural components of plant cells, they cause tissues to lose their integrity and turn into a mushy, water-soaked mass.
A wide range of crops is susceptible to Cytophaga infection, including potatoes, carrots, beets, and various vegetable seedlings. The bacteria are particularly dangerous because they can colonize plants in the field and continue their destructive activity during storage. The disease is common in environments where plant tissues are constantly wet or damaged by insects or handling.
Typical symptoms include the softening and browning of affected plant tissues, often accompanied by a pungent odor due to secondary saprophytic activity. On roots and tubers, these bacteria cause dark, sunken lesions that quickly spread throughout the tissue. The pathogen survives in soil, on plant debris, and in contaminated water sources, allowing it to re-emerge whenever the conditions favor bacterial activity.
The economic impact of Cytophaga is significant, often leading to total crop loss if conditions remain favorable for the bacteria. Preventive measures are essential and include ensuring proper field drainage, practicing careful crop rotation to prevent pathogen build-up, and sanitizing tools to stop transmission. Additionally, ensuring good air circulation in storage facilities and treating seeds or soil with appropriate bactericides can help minimize the risk of infection.
