Cytophaga rot is a plant pathology caused by the bacterium Cytophaga heparina. This pathogen is categorized as a destructive bacterial agent capable of producing potent extracellular enzymes that degrade plant tissues by hydrolyzing structural polysaccharides.
The bacterium predominantly affects various root crops, tubers, and vegetables. It thrives on nutrient-rich vegetable tissues, where it initiates enzymatic digestion. The infection can occur both in the field under high moisture conditions and in storage facilities, posing a significant risk to post-harvest quality.
Key symptoms include the appearance of water-soaked, spreading lesions on the surface of the plant tissue. These areas eventually soften, lose structural integrity, and develop a distinctively unpleasant, mushy texture. In advanced stages, the affected areas become entirely decomposed, often emitting a foul odor.
Environmental factors are crucial for the development of Cytophaga heparina. The bacterium flourishes in environments with high humidity and temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C. Poor ventilation in storage and mechanical damage during harvesting are the primary vectors that promote the rapid spread of the disease.
