Description
Deinococcosis is a plant disease caused by bacteria of the genus Deinococcus. While these bacteria are renowned in the scientific community for their radiation resistance, they can occasionally act as opportunistic pathogens in plant tissues, leading to reduced productivity and physiological stress in various agricultural crops.
The causal agent is a gram-positive bacterium characterized by an exceptional ability to repair DNA damage. In agricultural environments, it acts as a bacterial pathogen that enters the plant through natural openings or physical injuries. The disease typically manifests as a systemic or local bacterial infection that interferes with the host's metabolism.
Various vegetable and industrial crops are susceptible to this infection, particularly those growing in stressed soil conditions. The bacteria colonize the intercellular spaces and vascular system, disrupting the distribution of water and nutrients throughout the plant body, which leads to stunted growth and vitality loss.
Symptomatology involves leaf chlorosis, premature wilting, and the appearance of necrotic lesions on the leaves and stems. As the disease progresses, the plant's structural integrity weakens, making it highly vulnerable to secondary infections by other phytopathogenic fungi or bacteria, ultimately leading to significant yield losses.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. Prevention is the key, including strict sanitation of agricultural machinery and the use of healthy, pathogen-free propagation materials. Biological control agents, which promote plant immunity and occupy the ecological niches in the rhizosphere, are considered the most promising tools for mitigating the impact of this infection in the field.
