Description

Dermatophilosis is a contagious skin disease caused by the bacterium Dermatophilus congolensis, a member of the Dermatophilaceae family. It is recognized as a significant veterinary problem worldwide, frequently impacting cattle, sheep, horses, and goats in regions with high humidity.

The pathogen is characterized by its complex life cycle, involving the formation of branching mycelia that break down into motile zoospores. These zoospores are highly mobile in wet conditions, allowing the bacterium to spread rapidly across the surface of the skin when triggered by rainfall or high environmental moisture.

The disease primarily targets the epidermis of livestock. While it is rarely fatal in healthy animals, chronic infections lead to significant economic losses due to the degradation of hides, weight loss, and reduced milk production. In some cases, severe infections can cause secondary bacterial complications.

Symptoms typically manifest as crusty, matted lesions known as "paintbrush" scabs. When these crusts are removed, the underlying skin appears inflamed, raw, and often moist with pus. This condition causes discomfort to the animal and can impede movement in cases of severe limb involvement.

  • Poor sanitation and overcrowding in housing facilities.
