Dermatophilosis is a contagious skin disease caused by the bacterium Dermatophilus congolensis. While often confused with fungal infections, it is a bacterial pathogen that primarily impacts the livestock industry, including cattle, sheep, and goats, leading to significant skin lesions and reduced animal productivity.

The causative agent, Dermatophilus congolensis, is a filamentous, Gram-positive actinomycete. It produces motile zoospores that are highly dependent on moisture to move across the host's skin. The bacteria remain dormant in crusts or scabs on infected animals, ensuring long-term survival in the environment until environmental conditions become favorable again.

Clinical signs are characterized by the formation of thick, crusty scabs that adhere tightly to the skin. These lesions often occur along the back and limbs of animals. As the disease progresses, the hair becomes matted together with exudate, forming distinct tufts, commonly referred to as "paintbrush lesions," which are a diagnostic hallmark of the condition.

Development and spread of the infection are heavily influenced by environmental factors, particularly humidity and rain. High rainfall allows the zoospores to release from the scabs and spread to other areas of the body or to other susceptible animals. Skin trauma, caused by ticks or other ectoparasites, is the primary entry point for the bacteria.

The economic impact of dermatophilosis is significant for agricultural producers. It results in damage to hides, reduced milk and meat production, and potential secondary bacterial infections. In severe cases, the chronic nature of the disease can cause systemic stress, leading to weight loss and, in extreme situations, mortality in young or immunocompromised stock.

Management and prevention strategies focus on breaking the cycle of infection:

  • Early identification and isolation of infected animals to prevent herd spread.
  • Application of topical antiseptics and appropriate systemic antibiotic treatment.
  • Strict control of tick infestations, which act as mechanical vectors and cause skin damage.
  • Improving animal husbandry by providing dry shelter and maintaining hygienic conditions.
