Dickeya fangzhongdai is a species of Gram-negative bacteria belonging to the Pectobacteriaceae family, recognized as a significant cause of soft rot disease. It is a highly aggressive phytopathogen capable of causing rapid tissue degradation in a wide variety of plant species, leading to severe economic losses in agriculture.

The pathogen primarily affects crops such as potatoes and various ornamental plants, most notably orchids. It has emerged as a major threat in both tropical and temperate regions, often causing "black leg" or soft rot symptoms that can render entire harvests unmarketable due to the rapid decomposition of the host tissue.

Symptoms typically manifest as small, water-soaked lesions that spread rapidly across the plant's surface. As the bacterial enzymes degrade the middle lamella of plant cells, the affected tissue turns into a mushy, macerated mass accompanied by a foul odor, which is a classic diagnostic feature of this type of soft rot infection.

The development and spread of Dickeya fangzhongdai are strongly favored by high humidity and warm temperatures. The bacteria can persist in soil, water, and infected plant debris.
