Description
Dickeya oryzae is a highly destructive phytopathogenic bacterium characterized by its strong pectinolytic activity. It is primarily recognized as the causal agent of bacterial wilt in rice, leading to rapid tissue maceration and significant reduction in crop productivity globally.
The primary host for this pathogen is the rice plant (Oryza sativa). The bacterium colonizes the vascular system of the plant, secreting enzymes that break down cell wall components, effectively cutting off the plant's nutrient and water transport systems.
Diagnostic symptoms include sudden wilting of leaves, which often remain green initially before turning yellow and necrotic. The base of the stem frequently exhibits discoloration and soft rot symptoms, often accompanied by an unpleasant odor due to secondary bacterial colonization.
Disease progression is highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high humidity and temperatures ranging from 25°C to 35°C. The pathogen can be disseminated through contaminated irrigation water, infected seeds, agricultural machinery, and various insect vectors present in the paddy fields.
Management of Dickeya oryzae is challenging because curative treatments are virtually nonexistent. Therefore, integrated pest management (IPM) strategies are essential, focusing on the use of resistant varieties, strict phytosanitary practices, and the prevention of pathogen entry into non-infected fields through sanitation.
