Dickeya undicola is a Gram-negative bacterial pathogen known for causing severe soft rot disease in various plant species. It is a highly aggressive phytopathogen that has become a significant concern in global agriculture due to its ability to cause rapid tissue decay in both the field and storage environments.
The primary host for this pathogen is the potato, though it can affect a range of other tuber and vegetable crops. The bacteria invade plant tissues through lenticels, wounds caused by mechanical harvesting, or damage from pests. Once inside, they secrete cell-wall-degrading enzymes that liquefy the plant's internal structure.
Key symptoms include the rapid wilting of stems and the appearance of water-soaked, dark lesions on the foliage and stalks. In tubers, the infection manifests as a soft, necrotic, and often foul-smelling rot.
