Description
Dictyoglomia disease refers to a rare but severe bacterial infection caused by extremophilic microorganisms of the genus Dictyoglomia. In agricultural systems, this pathogen is recognized for its ability to thrive under stressful environmental conditions, making it a challenging target for standard plant protection methods.
The causative agent belongs to thermophilic anaerobic bacteria that infiltrate the vascular bundles of the plant. This condition is categorized as a systemic bacteriosis, leading to the disruption of water and nutrient translocation, which eventually results in the collapse of the plant's internal structure.
Susceptible crops primarily include greenhouse vegetables and specialized horticultural plants. These crops are particularly vulnerable when grown in high-temperature soil substrates where anaerobic conditions can easily persist, favoring the growth of these specific bacteria.
Symptoms of the infection typically include sudden wilting, chlorosis of the lower leaves, and necrotic lesions on the stem base. Advanced stages are characterized by a darkening of the vascular tissue and a soft, mushy consistency of the roots, indicating widespread tissue necrosis.
Disease development is accelerated by high temperatures and poor soil aeration. The pathogen is disseminated through contaminated tools, irrigation systems, and infected organic matter. Once introduced into a growing facility, it can rapidly colonize the rhizosphere of healthy plants.
