Enterobacteriosis is a bacterial disease complex affecting various plant species, caused by members of the Enterobacter genus. These facultative anaerobic bacteria are recognized as significant plant pathogens that trigger tissue maceration and soft rot processes. The disease primarily targets the parenchymal tissues, leading to a rapid breakdown of cell wall integrity through the secretion of enzymes.
The host range is broad, significantly impacting vegetables, fruits, and ornamental plants. Crops such as potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, and various bulbs are particularly susceptible to Enterobacter-related decay. The infection often initiates in the rhizosphere, moving upwards through the vascular system or colonizing the surface tissues after wounding, leading to systemic infection.
Symptoms typically present as water-soaked lesions that quickly progress into necrotic spots. As the infection advances, the internal tissues turn into a foul-smelling, mushy mass. Infected plants exhibit wilting, chlorosis, and stunting. In advanced stages, the structural integrity of the stem or root collapses, rendering the plant or crop unit completely unusable.

This necessitates rigorous quality control and careful monitoring of post-harvest environments.
Effective management relies on a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Sanitation is the most critical factor, including the sterilization of tools and the use of disease-free transplants. Controlling pest populations is essential, as they often serve as vectors for the bacteria. While chemical control using copper-based bactericides can be effective, they should be integrated into a broader strategy emphasizing crop rotation and proper environmental management.
