Enterococcus, while commonly recognized in clinical microbiology, can occasionally act as an opportunistic pathogen in plant pathology. The infection caused by these bacteria is categorized as a systemic bacterial disease that primarily targets plants under abiotic stress or those grown in poor sanitary conditions. It manifests as a disruption of plant vascular functions leading to wilting and decay.
The disease affects a variety of greenhouse crops, ornamental plants, and some berries. Plants that are particularly susceptible include those with high water requirements and those grown in artificial substrates, where the moisture levels are consistently high, providing an ideal environment for bacterial colonization and rapid proliferation.
The symptoms of Enterococcus infection usually begin with chlorosis and stunting of the plant. As the disease progresses, systemic wilting occurs, even when soil moisture is adequate. Infected tissues often exhibit water-soaked lesions or necrotic patches, and in advanced stages, the stem base may become soft and discolored due to the breakdown of cellulose and pectin by bacterial enzymes.
Environmental conditions are critical for the development of this disease. Excessive humidity, poor air circulation, and improper drainage facilitate the spread of bacteria through the root zone. Furthermore, physical injury to the plant, caused by transplanting or insect damage, provides easy entry points for the pathogen into the vascular system.
Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach focusing on prevention. Key strategies include maintaining high standards of hygiene in greenhouses, ensuring good drainage to avoid water stagnation, and using disease-free starter plants. Implementing biological control agents that compete with harmful bacteria can also help in suppressing the development of the infection within the root zone.
