Description
The family Entophysalidaceae consists of colonial cyanobacteria that are increasingly recognized as a problematic factor in specialized agriculture. While not typical plant pathogens, their ability to form dense biofilms on soil surfaces and hydroponic equipment creates significant physiological stress for various crops.
The causative agent of these biofilm formations is the rapid division of cells within a shared mucilaginous matrix. They thrive in environments characterized by high light intensity and constant moisture, making them particularly prevalent in commercial greenhouses and vertical farming facilities.
These organisms primarily affect seedling crops, ornamental plants, and hydroponic vegetables. When they colonize the surface of rockwool, perlite, or soil, they create a physical barrier that restricts oxygen diffusion to the root zone, directly impeding plant respiration and nutrient uptake.
Symptoms appear as a dark green to blackish, slimy crust covering the growth medium. As the colony grows, it can wrap around the base of young stems. This presence often masks underlying issues or attracts secondary pathogens, leading to stunted growth, yellowing of leaves, and potential seedling mortality.
