It is important to clarify the scientific status of Eperythrozoon. In modern biological classification, organisms previously belonging to the genus Eperythrozoon have been reclassified into the genus Mycoplasma (hemotropic mycoplasmas). This is not a plant disease but a dangerous animal infection causing hemoplasmosis, a condition that affects red blood cells in mammals.
The pathogens are small epicellular microorganisms that attach to the membranes of erythrocytes. They cause damage to the cells and subsequent hemolysis, which leads to the development of anemia. Transmission occurs primarily through vectors such as blood-sucking insects, including ticks, lice, and fleas.
The species most susceptible to infection include livestock such as pigs, cattle, and sheep. In industrial animal husbandry, eperythrozoonosis can affect entire herds, especially when sanitary and hygienic standards are violated and animals are kept at high density in confined spaces.
Symptoms of the disease include progressive pallor of mucous membranes, jaundice, general weakness, and a significant decrease in productivity. Young animals often show growth retardation, fever, and high mortality rates if timely therapy is not initiated during the early stages of the infection.
Preventive measures are based on strict control of parasite levels in living areas. Key actions include:
