Description
Important note: Eperythrozoon ovis, currently reclassified as Mycoplasma ovis, is not a plant disease. It is a significant pathogenic organism that causes hemotrophic disease in sheep and goats, leading to systemic health issues in livestock.
The causative agent belongs to the genus Mycoplasma and attaches to the surface of erythrocytes. This interaction disrupts the red blood cells, causing them to be destroyed by the host's immune system, which results in secondary hemolytic anemia.
This pathogen specifically affects ovine species. Clinical manifestations often include fever, jaundice, pale mucous membranes, and overall lethargy, which significantly decreases the profitability of livestock production due to stunted growth and poor wool quality.
The spread of the infection is primarily facilitated by blood-sucking arthropods, such as ticks, lice, and stable flies. It can also be transmitted mechanically via contaminated needles or shearing equipment used across multiple animals in a herd.
Prevention focuses on the rigorous control of ectoparasites and maintaining high standards of hygiene during veterinary procedures. Producers should implement the following measures to protect their flocks:
- Regular application of acaricides and insecticides to control vector populations.
- Strict sterilization of instruments used for vaccination, tagging, and shearing.
- Quarantining newly introduced animals to prevent the entry of carriers into the healthy herd.
- Providing balanced nutrition to support immune function in stressed animals.
