Description
The causative agent of the disease is the bacterium Erwinia pyrifoliae, a Gram-negative pathogen that causes significant damage to pome fruit trees. It is closely related to the better-known fire blight pathogen but is classified as a distinct species that requires specific diagnostic and management approaches.
This disease primarily affects pears and quinces. While it primarily targets Asian pear cultivars, it can also infect various species of the Rosaceae family. Its ability to cause rapid decline makes it a major concern for fruit growers, as it can result in the loss of entire orchards if not managed correctly.
Symptoms typically manifest as the wilting and blackening of blossoms, which eventually spreads to tender shoots and leaves. The affected parts look charred, giving the disease its common name. In humid conditions, creamy or amber-colored bacterial ooze emerges from the infected bark or shoots, serving as a primary inoculum source.
The development of the disease is heavily dependent on weather conditions. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures during the flowering stage create an ideal environment for bacterial multiplication. Wind, water splashes, and pollinating insects are the primary vectors that spread the bacteria throughout the orchard.
Integrated management is essential for controlling Erwinia pyrifoliae. Growers must focus on exclusion and sanitation, as there is no single cure once the tree is systemically infected. Regular pruning of infected branches, disinfecting tools between cuts, and the use of copper-based sprays during the dormant and early growth stages are standard practices to minimize infection risk.
